Miles Coverdale (1488–1569)

Miles Coverdale was an English preacher and printer whose quiet steadiness served a large purpose: putting the whole Bible into the hands of common people. By 1535, at about age 47, he labored under real threat. In an age when English Scripture could be treated as sedition, he pursued the work with patient courage, convinced that God’s people should hear God’s voice plainly. His ministry carried the marks of Christian character—reverence for God, love for ordinary believers, and a willingness to suffer loss so others might gain lasting treasure.

The 1535 Coverdale Bible (Issued October 4, 1535)

On October 4, 1535, Coverdale issued the first complete printed Bible in English. Though linked to London’s book trade and preaching life, the production of such a work often required careful secrecy, skilled allies, and at times help beyond England’s borders. Coverdale drew on the best resources available to him: earlier English work, Reformation-era translations, and scholarly aids pointing back toward Hebrew and Greek. His aim was not novelty but clarity, faithfulness, and usefulness in worship and the home. The result helped open the Scriptures to families who could now read, hear, and pass along God’s Word without depending solely on a learned few.

Faith, Courage, and the Spread of the Word

Coverdale’s work stands beside other costly efforts of the era, when translators and printers faced interrogation, imprisonment, and worse. This was not mere literary ambition; it was the conviction that Scripture is God’s gift to His people. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). And, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

Later Influence

Coverdale later served on other major translation projects, continuing with the same steady faith. His life reminds believers that God often advances His truth through persevering servants—men and women who do what is right, do it carefully, and do it for the good of Christ’s flock.
