Rome in 964

In 964, Emperor Otto I entered Rome amid a bitter struggle over the papacy. The city had been shaken by the scandalous reign of John XII, whose moral collapse and political maneuvering disgraced the office he held. After John’s death, Romans hastily elected Benedict, a deacon, hoping to regain local control and stability. But the choice ignited a new crisis: rival claimants, divided loyalties, and the threat of violence in the streets of the ancient city where apostles once preached Christ.

Benedict V (the “Deacon-Pope”)

Benedict was elevated quickly and at a perilous moment, when fear and faction could easily have led to bloodshed. When Otto’s forces compelled surrender, Benedict did not rally Rome to a last stand. Instead, he submitted to judgment, was reduced to his former clerical rank, and accepted exile under German oversight. Though his election was disputed and his papacy brief, his willingness to yield rather than burn the city in civil war stands as a sobering kind of courage: restraint when pride would demand revenge.

Otto I and the Restoration of Leo VIII

Otto, crowned emperor and determined to restrain Roman chaos, backed Leo VIII and restored him after Rome’s capitulation. His intervention was severe, and the mingling of imperial power with Church leadership revealed how vulnerable the Church can become when spiritual authority is entangled with ambition. Yet even hard measures sometimes curb lawlessness and protect the flock from predators. Scripture sets a high bar for overseers: “For an overseer must be blameless… not arrogant… not violent, but gentle.” (Titus 1:7).

A Wounded Church, a Holy Call

This episode reminds us that Christ’s people suffer when corruption rules, but God is not defeated by human sin. He can use discipline—even painful discipline—to restrain chaos and call leaders to humility. “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5). When leadership fails, believers must cling to Christ, pray for purity, honor rightful order, and pursue holiness—trusting the Lord to cleanse His Church and preserve His witness.
