Secret Baptism (June 1, 1924)

On June 1, 1924, in Taiwan, a young woman named Ji Wang was baptized quietly, choosing Christ while fearing what open allegiance might cost among the people with whom she lived. Her first steps were marked by trembling faith rather than public confidence, yet her obedience testified that the Lord meets His servants in hidden places and strengthens them over time. Her story reflects the gospel pattern that courage is often born where fear once ruled.

Calling and Preparation

As Ji Wang’s faith matured, a Presbyterian missionary urged her to pursue training so she could bring the gospel to her own tribe—known for head-hunting and a pervasive dread of spirits and curses. She agreed, embracing discipline, Scripture study, and the hard formation of character that turns conviction into endurance. Her development showed that Christian service is not merely zeal, but sanctified perseverance: prayer, learning, and a willingness to be taught before attempting to teach others.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

Return to the Tribe

Ji Wang returned not as a conqueror but as a witness. She carried no weapon except the Word, and no strategy except faithful proclamation, patient discipleship, and steadfast prayer. Where spiritual fear once demanded appeasement, she spoke of Christ’s lordship and mercy. Her heroism was quiet and daily: choosing truth when it was costly, resisting discouragement, and refusing to measure success by comfort or safety. Her ministry modeled love that confronts darkness without hatred, and faith that persists when results are slow.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses… to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

Legacy (1946)

By the time of her death in 1946, five thousand had been baptized through her ministry. The number points beyond human ability to God’s power working through ordinary obedience. Ji Wang’s life remains a record of Christ’s strength perfected in weakness: a timid believer made steadfast, a secret baptism bearing public fruit, and a local servant used to gather many into the visible fellowship of the church.
