A Voyage of Faith to West Africa

Johanna Veenstra (Missionary Pioneer)

Johanna Veenstra is remembered as the first missionary sent by the Christian Reformed Church to Nigeria. In an era when overseas travel was slow, uncertain, and often dangerous, she accepted a calling that required leaving family, familiar worship, and the securities of home. Her service reflected the missionary conviction that Christ’s command reaches beyond borders and comforts: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations… And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:19–20).

October 2, 1919: Departure from New York

On October 2, 1919, only months after the upheavals following the Great War, Veenstra sailed from New York aboard the Mauretania, bound first for England and then onward to Lagos. Such a journey required endurance and patience: long days at sea, unpredictable weather, and the sobering awareness that distance could quickly become isolation. Yet her courage was not loud or self-promoting. It was the steady kind—rooted in prayer, obedience, and the belief that God’s providence extends across an ocean. “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

England and Lagos: Crossing into a New Field

Passing through England and continuing to Lagos placed her on the doorstep of a complex coastal city shaped by trade routes, colonial administration, and many languages and traditions. Entering a new culture demanded humility and teachability as much as boldness. Missionary heroism here meant daily faithfulness: listening carefully, serving consistently, and refusing to treat people as projects rather than neighbors made in God’s image.

Legacy: A Lasting Door for Gospel Witness

Veenstra’s quiet devotion helped open a durable pathway for gospel ministry that outlived her earliest days on the field. Her work contributed to the planting and strengthening of what became the Christian Reformed Church of Nigeria, a testimony that God often advances His kingdom through ordinary acts of steadfast obedience. Her story continues to encourage believers to trust the Lord’s promise: “Do not fear, for I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you” (Isaiah 41:10).
