A Young Widow’s Renewed Yes to God’s Call

Aimee’s Second Beginning (1911)

On October 24, 1911, Aimee Elizabeth Kennedy (later known as Aimee Semple McPherson), age 21, married Harold Stewart McPherson, also 21. The wedding followed a season of deep grief: she had returned from China a missionary widow after the death of her first husband, Robert James Semple. Rather than withdrawing into sorrow, Aimee chose to rebuild her life with a steady confidence that the Lord still directs the steps of His servants. “And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

China, Loss, and Calling

Aimee and Robert Semple had traveled to China with a clear missionary aim—bearing witness to Christ where the gospel was less known. Semple’s death cut short their shared plans, leaving Aimee to endure both the hazards of overseas life and the loneliness of sudden bereavement. Her return to North America was not merely a change of geography but a trial of faith: would suffering silence her, or would it refine her? In her later preaching and compassion for the hurting, she often carried the imprint of those early losses—proof that Christian courage is not the absence of tears, but endurance with hope.

From Home to Highway (1918)

Though her marriage to Harold McPherson eventually ended in divorce in 1921, her zeal for the gospel did not fade. In 1918 she launched an evangelistic ministry that quickly broadened in reach, marked by bold preaching, prayer for the sick, and practical mercy to the poor and distressed. This work matured into what became the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, known for proclaiming Christ as Savior, Baptizer with the Holy Spirit, Healer, and Coming King.

Faith Under Pressure

Aimee’s story illustrates persevering trust when life turns unexpectedly. Her forward movement—through widowhood, family strain, and public ministry—echoes the Lord’s promise: “Do not fear, for I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).
