Anthimus Stands Firm in Nicomedia Anthimus of Nicomedia Anthimus served as bishop in Nicomedia, a prominent city of Bithynia on the Propontis (near today’s İzmit, Turkey). In the early fourth century it functioned as an imperial center in the East, placing the local church in the shadow of the throne. Anthimus is remembered for steady, pastoral courage when public hostility turned into official policy and confessing Christ suddenly carried a death sentence. Nicomedia and the Opening Blows (303) In February of 303, Diocletian’s first edict against Christians struck with force: churches were torn down, assemblies restricted, and the Scriptures targeted for destruction. Ancient accounts describe a church in Nicomedia being demolished and sacred books seized and burned. With Galerius pressing for harsher measures, believers were pushed to prove loyalty to Rome by offering sacrifice to the gods—an act that would deny the Lord they had been baptized to serve. Witness on April 27, 303 April 27, 303, marks the witness of Anthimus during these early, terrifying days of persecution. He did not barter truth for safety. Rather than retreat into silence, he continued to shepherd the flock, strengthening wavering hearts and urging believers to endure with clean consciences. When commanded to participate in idolatrous sacrifice, he refused. His confession of Christ brought arrest and death, and the Church remembered him as a martyr—one who testified that Jesus is worth more than ease, reputation, or even life itself. “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.” (Matthew 10:28) Legacy of Faithful Courage Anthimus’s heroism was not bravado but faith: the quiet strength of a shepherd who would not abandon the sheep. His death proclaimed that the Church’s hope is not in preserving life at all costs, but in clinging to the Lord who conquered death. In every age, his witness calls Christians to patient endurance, steadfast worship, and fearless loyalty to Christ above all earthly demands. “Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10) |
