Antipas of Pergamum, “My Faithful Witness”

Antipas of Pergamum: The Faithful Witness

Antipas is remembered in Scripture as the “faithful witness” commended by the risen Christ to the church in Pergamum. In a city saturated with religious prestige and public pressure to conform, he stands as a named example of steadfast loyalty when compromise would have been safer. Revelation preserves his honor even though history leaves most details silent, teaching that the Lord knows His people personally and records what the world forgets.

Pergamum: A City of Thrones and Temples

Pergamum (in Asia Minor) was renowned for grand temples and civic devotion to Rome. Emperor worship was not merely private belief but a public badge of loyalty; refusing it could be treated as social betrayal. Jesus describes Pergamum as the place “where Satan’s throne is” (Revelation 2:13), highlighting the spiritual conflict beneath the city’s culture. Believers there were pressed to blend in, to keep faith quiet, or to mix Christ with acceptable idols.

Christ’s Commendation and Antipas’s Honor

The Lord praises the church for holding fast to His name and not denying the faith, even in the face of bloodshed: “Yet you hold fast to My name and did not deny your faith in Me, even in the days when My faithful witness Antipas was killed among you, where Satan dwells.” (Revelation 2:13). Antipas’s heroism is not portrayed as grand spectacle but as faithful endurance—courage rooted in allegiance to Jesus rather than in personal strength. His witness reminds believers that fidelity is measured by obedience, not visibility.

Martyrdom and Costly Loyalty

Later tradition says Antipas was martyred for refusing idolatry, choosing death rather than offering worship that belongs to God alone. Whether or not every detail is certain, the church has long received his story as a call to costly loyalty: when the world demands approval, the disciple answers with faithfulness. Antipas’s memory encourages believers facing pressure at work, in family life, or in hostile cultures to resist subtle compromise and remain true.

Encouragement for the Church Today

Antipas’s hidden life and remembered name assure us that Christ sees obedience in dark places and honors those who endure. “Be faithful, even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10). Faithfulness is precious to Christ, and no act of courage for His name is ever overlooked.
