Demos Shakarian and a Lay Movement

Demos Shakarian was a California dairyman and lay evangelist who believed God could use ordinary working men to bear public witness to Christ. In the early 1950s he helped launch the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International (FGBMFI), a network designed to bring testimonies of salvation, Scripture, and Spirit-empowered living into everyday settings—banquet rooms, restaurants, and business circles—where many would never attend a church service.

Shakarian’s approach emphasized humility, courage, and integrity: a man’s word, a man’s work, and a man’s willingness to confess Christ without shame. The fellowship’s meetings often featured personal accounts of repentance, restored families, answered prayer, and new life in Christ, inviting listeners to respond with faith.

December 26, 1952: A Crisis of Discouragement

On December 26, 1952, Shakarian faced a severe test. Attendance and visible results seemed painfully small, and the effort felt fragile. He told friends that the meeting scheduled for that day would be the last—an understandable response for a leader carrying responsibility, expense, criticism, and the slow ache of unmet hopes.

Yet this moment exposed a deeper question common to Christian service: whether success would be measured by immediate numbers or by obedience. Scripture speaks directly to such seasons: “Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).

A Vision, a Call, and a Decision

The night before, Shakarian received a vivid vision of lifeless men bound in chains rising to life. He understood it as God’s summons to persevere for those spiritually captive—men outwardly functioning yet inwardly deadened by sin, fear, despair, and unbelief. The image echoed the Bible’s insistence that the real battle is spiritual, and that God alone gives life.

Instead of quitting, he chose steadiness over surrender. This was a quiet kind of heroism: not spectacle, but faithfulness—doing the next right thing because God is faithful. “Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:23).

Momentum and Legacy

Shakarian went ahead with the meeting, and the fellowship soon gained fresh momentum. Over time, FGBMFI spread into more than a thousand chapters worldwide, helping bring hundreds of thousands to faith, and reminding believers that God often advances His work through perseverance when results seem smallest.
