This Week in Religion (DuMont Television, 1952–1954)

On March 16, 1952, the DuMont Television Network premiered This Week in Religion, often cited as the first religious program on American television. At a time when TV was still a young, novelty medium—quickly filling with variety shows, sports, and light entertainment—this broadcast carved out space for thoughtful, reverent conversation about God, moral duty shaped by Scripture, and how current events should be weighed in the fear of the Lord.

The program’s weekly rhythm encouraged viewers to look beyond headlines and ask enduring questions: What is true? What is right? What honors God? Rather than treating faith as a private hobby, it placed belief before a watching public and assumed that God’s Word speaks to ordinary life, public decisions, and the conscience of a nation. In that sense, its very existence was a quiet kind of heroism: believers and broadcasters choosing conviction over convenience, and witness over silence, in a culture learning to love its screens.

Notably, it was described as the only ecumenical religious program among early television’s offerings, bringing together differing Christian voices for civil discussion. Done well, this kind of exchange models charity without surrendering clarity—remembering that truth and love must not be separated. “But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense… But respond with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15).

Broadcast Setting and Enduring Lessons

DuMont, headquartered in the New York broadcast world that helped shape early American television, gave the series a national platform during years when families gathered around a single set and watched together. The show ran for two years, ending with its final airing in October 1954.

Its legacy still speaks: new tools are not neutral, and believers must use them wisely—boldly, but not loudly; confidently, but not cruelly. “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
