Fixing His Eyes on Christ at the End Huang Naishang (d. 1924) Huang Naishang served the church in China as pastor, Bible translator, YMCA director, newspaper editor, reformer, educator, and counselor to governments. In an era marked by rapid modernization and political turbulence, he worked to strengthen congregations and to bring Christian truth into public life with clarity and patience. His leadership blended conviction with service, aiming not at fame but at faithfulness. Huang’s ministry joined word and deed. As a translator and teacher, he labored so ordinary believers could read, understand, and live the Scriptures. As an editor and public voice, he addressed the moral questions of his day, urging integrity, justice, and compassion shaped by the gospel. His counsel to civic leaders reflected the belief that public decisions are never morally neutral and that righteousness exalts a people. Public Witness and Courage Heroism in Huang’s story is not found in spectacle but in endurance. He carried responsibilities across church, education, and social reform without surrendering the primacy of Christ. His example commends disciplined study, steady prayer, and a willingness to bear misunderstanding for the sake of truth. In his life, the church’s mission was not retreat from society, but faithful presence within it. Final Testimony (September 22, 1924) On September 22, 1924, Huang “finished his race.” As his strength failed, he asked his wife to lift a picture of Christ where he could see it, then to place it upon his chest. The gesture was a quiet confession: his only hope was not in accomplishments, titles, or influence, but in the Crucified and Risen Lord. Even in weakness he preached—without words—that salvation is received by looking to Jesus. His passing recalls the apostle’s confidence: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7). It also points believers to the lifelong posture Huang embodied: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:2). His last request summarized his message for the good of many: look to Christ, trust Him, and endure in hope. |
