George Fox (1624–1691)

George Fox was an English preacher whose life was marked by a persistent call to turn from empty religion to obedient trust in the living Christ. Leaving the Anglican church around age 23, he searched the Scriptures with urgency, convinced that true faith must bear fruit in repentance, holiness, and practical righteousness. His message pressed beyond outward ceremony to inward submission: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15).

Fox traveled widely through England—often on foot or horseback—preaching in marketplaces, fields, and meetinghouses. He urged hearers to read the Bible honestly, to pray, to forsake sin, and to follow the risen Lord with a clean conscience. His ministry was not welcomed by many authorities. He endured repeated arrests and imprisonments, including harsh confinement for refusing oaths and for continuing to speak in Christ’s name. Yet he kept preaching, showing courage that was steady rather than showy, rooted in conviction rather than controversy.

Gathering of the Society of Friends (1660 and after)

In the upheavals following England’s civil conflicts, Fox helped gather scattered believers into what became known as the Society of Friends, later called Quakers. Their meetings emphasized simple worship, earnest prayer, and a disciplined Christian life. Fox also defended Christian peace, plain truthfulness, and care for the poor, insisting that believers should be known by integrity in business, mercy toward the needy, and faithfulness under pressure. “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22).

Fox died in London at 67, still urging Christians to “live in the power of God.” Near the end of his course, his exhortations remained focused: keep close to Christ, walk in the light you have received, and do not trade living devotion for religious habit. His steadfastness remains a summons to follow Christ faithfully whatever the cost, trusting that the Lord sustains those who obey Him.
