George Wishart (1513–1546)

George Wishart was a Scottish preacher whose ministry helped prepare the way for reformation across Scotland. Trained in Scripture and shaped by the growing recovery of biblical teaching in Europe, he traveled widely, calling people to repentance and faith in Christ and urging confidence in God’s grace rather than trust in religious merit. His preaching in places like Edinburgh and Dundee was marked by clarity, courage, and a pastor’s heart, even when opposition and danger were rising.

Edinburgh and Dundee: Gospel Proclamation Under Pressure

In Edinburgh, Wishart’s message confronted both moral complacency and spiritual bondage, pressing hearers to come directly to Christ. In Dundee, amid hardship and fear, he labored with unusual compassion, strengthening the afflicted and exhorting the fearful to seek the Lord. Many remembered not only his words but his conduct—meekness without weakness, and boldness without bitterness.

St Andrews: Trial and Martyrdom (March 1, 1546)

Wishart was seized and tried at St Andrews under Cardinal David Beaton, a leading churchman determined to silence reforming voices. Condemned for “heresy,” he faced execution with calm courage. Witnesses recalled his prayers and his refusal to curse his enemies. He urged those tasked with carrying out the sentence to act without malice, showing a conscience governed by Christ even as the flames rose. His death preached as loudly as his sermons: the gospel is worth more than life.

Legacy: The Word Not Bound

Wishart’s steadfastness strengthened many hearts and stirred further reform. His martyrdom impressed young leaders, including John Knox, who would later carry the same message with renewed resolve. Though Christ’s servants may be slain, the message they bear remains unconquered: “But the word of God cannot be bound!” (2 Timothy 2:9). In that confidence, Wishart’s witness still calls the church to faithful preaching, humble holiness, and fearless love.
