Interdict of Florence (1376)

On March 31, 1376, Pope Gregory XI, governing the papacy from Avignon, issued a sweeping interdict against the city of Florence. The Republic had joined a league of Italian powers seeking to curb papal temporal control, a struggle later known as the War of the Eight Saints (1375–1378). Under the interdict, public worship was curtailed and the sacraments were broadly denied, striking ordinary believers who had little say in high politics.

Avignon, Italy, and a Crisis of Shepherding

Gregory XI’s distance from Rome symbolized a wider fracture: spiritual oversight entangled with territorial rule. The conflict reached beyond Florence into the Papal States, stirring unrest in towns where loyalties were divided between civic freedom and papal authority. In practice, the interdict became a weapon of pressure rather than a medicine for souls, and it risked training people to see God’s gifts as bargaining chips.

Scripture warns against this misuse of sacred trust: “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who only feed themselves! … You have not strengthened the weak… but with force and harshness you have ruled them.” (Ezekiel 34:2,4)

Harsh Measures and Moral Shock

Alongside spiritual penalties came severe temporal actions. Licenses were granted to seize Florentine property and to enslave Florentines wherever found—an escalation that revealed how quickly power can slip into cruelty when unchecked by fear of God. Many suffered loss, exile, and humiliation. Yet suffering also exposed consciences: some sought reconciliation, fasting, and prayer, realizing that civic pride and personal sin alike can harden a people.

Catherine of Siena and the Call to Peace

In this turmoil, Catherine of Siena emerged as a courageous voice, urging Gregory XI toward repentance, gentleness, and reconciliation, and pressing for a return to Rome. Her plea was not for political victory but for Christlike shepherding and the healing of the Church’s witness. Her example shows moral heroism: speaking truth with reverence, seeking peace without surrendering holiness.
