Into the Desert by Faith Mildred Cable (1878–1952) On June 11, 1923, Mildred Cable left Hwo Chow in China’s northwest frontier, turning her face toward the long caravan roads leading into the deserts and oases of Central Asia. She did not depart with the confidence of a completed map, but with the settled conviction that the Lord had called and would provide. Her work was marked by steady evangelistic labor—teaching, Scripture distribution, and patient conversation in places where the name of Christ was little known and often misunderstood. Her courage was not loud; it was the repeated choice to obey when comfort, safety, and certainty were absent. The “Chinese Trio” Traveling with Cable were three Chinese women believers—often remembered together as the “Chinese Trio.” Their partnership displayed a rare unity across culture and background: Chinese and Western Christians walking side by side, sharing burdens, and honoring one another’s gifts. In an era when outsiders often dismissed local believers, their shared witness quietly affirmed the church as one body. Their example echoed the simplicity of apostolic service: praying, speaking the Word, and enduring hardship without demanding recognition. Hwo Chow to Central Asia (1923 Expedition) From Hwo Chow they moved along routes shaped by wind, scarcity, and danger—hard ground underfoot, bitter cold, choking dust, sickness, and the threat of banditry or lawlessness. Yet their purpose remained clear: to carry Scripture and the message of Christ to towns and villages scattered across the Gobi and the Silk Road corridor. Their progress was often “step by step,” guided by providence rather than visibility: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5–6) Legacy In later years, that same obedience helped open hundreds of Gobi settlements to gospel witness through visits, literature, and relationships formed under hardship. Their story commends persevering faith—listening for God’s direction and walking it out: “And whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: ‘This is the way. Walk in it.’” (Isaiah 30:21) |
