Trial of Joan of Arc (Rouen, 1431)

January 9, 1431, marked the opening phases of proceedings at Rouen against Joan of Arc, the teenage “Maid” whose courage had stirred France during the Hundred Years’ War. Captured at Compiègne and sold to English interests, she was brought to Rouen to be tried not chiefly for war, but for faith—visions, vows, and obedience. The court’s aim was to condemn her as a heretic and, by doing so, discredit the cause she had served.

Rouen: Prison and Court

Rouen, under English control, provided both the setting and the pressure. Joan was held under guard, isolated, and watched by soldiers rather than confined to a church prison as was customary for an ecclesiastical trial. Learned clerics and legal minds gathered—men skilled in questions designed to corner the conscience, distort words, and force a fearful recantation. Yet again and again, Joan answered plainly, asked for counsel, and appealed to God’s higher judgment.

Bishop Pierre Cauchon and the English Interest

Bishop Pierre Cauchon led the English-backed process, seeking a verdict that would satisfy political power while wearing the robes of religious authority. The court’s structure, its chosen advisers, and its location reflected this entanglement of governance and theology. Joan’s insistence that her calling was from God challenged both the court’s control and the narrative of her enemies.

Joan’s heroism was not only on the battlefield but in endurance: patience under accusation, restraint when provoked, and a steady refusal to trade truth for safety.
