José Luis Sánchez del Río Chooses Christ Over Fear

José Luis Sánchez del Río (1913–1928)

José Luis Sánchez del Río was a fourteen-year-old Mexican boy who became a martyr during the Cristero persecution. Raised with simple, earnest faith, he loved Jesus Christ with a child’s sincerity and a disciple’s resolve. In an age when public loyalty to Christ could cost everything, José Luis learned early that courage is not the absence of fear, but obedience in the midst of it.

Cristero Persecution (Mexico, 1926–1929)

In the 1920s, Mexico’s government enforced harsh restrictions against the Church, seeking to silence Christian worship and weaken the public confession of faith. Many believers suffered for gathering, praying, teaching, and refusing to treat Christ as a private hobby rather than a public King. The Cristero conflict grew out of this pressure, and in many towns ordinary families faced threats meant to produce one thing: denial.

Capture and Martyrdom (February 10, 1928)

José Luis was captured for aiding the Cristero cause and was pressured to save his life by renouncing Christ. He would not. Accounts describe torture and mocking meant to break his will, yet he prayed and remained steady. In a rare display of youthful spiritual maturity, he forgave those who harmed him and encouraged others by his calmness. As he was led to his execution, he openly confessed Christ—reportedly crying, “¡Viva Cristo Rey!”—a declaration that Jesus reigns even when earthly powers rage.

Heroism of Faith and the Christian Life

José Luis’s courage was not rooted in pride, but in love: love for the Savior who first loved him. Scripture prepares believers for this costly loyalty: “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28) His story also steadies suffering Christians with hope: “I consider that our present sufferings are not comparable to the glory that will be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18)

Legacy

His witness calls Christians to value Christ above comfort, to answer cruelty with forgiveness, and to trust that God wastes none of His people’s faithful suffering.
