Meeting God Beyond the Page Frank Laubach (1884–1970) Frank C. Laubach was an American missionary, pioneer linguist, and literacy advocate whose work took him to the southern Philippines, especially Mindanao and nearby regions where many Moro communities lived. Trained in education and shaped by pastoral concern, he became known for devising practical alphabets and teaching methods so adults could read in their own languages. His later “Each One Teach One” approach spread worldwide, pairing gospel-hearted compassion with rigorous, patient instruction. March 9, 1930: “Soul to Soul” On March 9, 1930, while laboring among the Moro people, Laubach wrote words later gathered in Letters by a Modern Mystic: “It seems to me…that the very Bible cannot be read as a substitute for meeting God soul to soul and face to face.” The statement was not a rejection of Scripture but a warning against treating even holy words as a replacement for the Lord Himself. Laubach’s reverence for the Bible matured into continual prayer, listening obedience, and an active dependence on God’s presence for daily strength and guidance. Scripture and Communion Laubach’s testimony harmonizes with the Bible’s own insistence that God’s Word leads believers into living fellowship. “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). The Word instructs, corrects, and comforts, yet it also summons the reader to worship, repentance, and trust—real contact with the One who speaks. Christ Himself taught dependence not as theory but as life: “Apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Moro Context and Quiet Heroism Serving among the Moro peoples required courage, cultural humility, and endurance in unfamiliar settings. Laubach’s “heroism” was often quiet: staying faithful in slow progress, honoring people by learning their speech, and refusing to manipulate or rush spiritual realities. His literacy work embodied love of neighbor—opening doors to Scripture access, practical education, and dignity—while pointing beyond information to communion with the living God who equips His servants for faithful, fruitful service. |
