Repentance and a Courageous Witness in China

Zang Xien, July 2, 1921

In the county town of Zang Xien, China, 21-year-old Wang Ming-dao preached his first public sermon on July 2, 1921. He chose words that cut through religion without repentance: “Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand.” The message was simple and Scripture-driven, aimed at the conscience rather than the crowd. Many listeners encountered not merely moral advice, but the living call of God to turn from sin and seek mercy.

Wang Ming-dao (1900–1991)

Wang emerged as a pastor known for holiness, earnest prayer, and plain truth. His preaching did not flatter; it warned, invited, and instructed. He pressed the necessity of the new birth, the authority of the Bible, and the practical demands of discipleship. In spirit he embodied the apostolic charge: “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction” (2 Timothy 4:2).

Refusal of Political Control

As Communist power consolidated, the state promoted the Three-Self Patriotic Church system to supervise and reshape Christian faith under political oversight. Wang refused to surrender Christ’s lordship to any earthly authority, rejecting assimilation that would bind the gospel to state permission. His stand was not mere stubbornness; it was the conviction that the church belongs to Christ, and that truth cannot be revised by pressure. His resolve echoes the apostles: “We must obey God rather than men!” (Acts 5:29).

Imprisonment and Steadfast Witness

For his refusal, Wang endured long imprisonment rather than compromise. He accepted suffering as the cost of fidelity, choosing a clean conscience over personal safety. His endurance displayed Christian courage: suffering without hatred, firmness without theatrics, and hope anchored beyond prison walls. His example reminded believers that faithfulness is measured not by ease, but by obedience.

Influence on China’s House Churches

Wang’s steadfast witness helped nurture China’s house churches, strengthening believers to gather, pray, and hold fast to a clear gospel even when public religion was controlled. His life taught that true spiritual fruit grows where Christ is honored above all, repentance is preached, and the Scriptures remain the final authority.
