Founding and Purpose

On September 5, 1950, Baptist Bible College opened in Springfield, Missouri, under the auspices of the Baptist Bible Fellowship. Its stated aim was plain: to prepare men and women for ministry while treating Scripture as the final authority for faith and practice. The school’s early identity was shaped by a conviction that Christ’s servants must be trained to handle the Word faithfully, not merely to gain religious credentials. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

Postwar Sacrifice

The college began in a postwar season when many Americans were rebuilding homes, careers, and communities. Pastors and laymen nevertheless stepped out in faith, giving sacrificially of funds, time, and personal comfort to establish a place where preachers, missionaries, and church workers could be equipped. Their quiet heroism was not marked by headlines but by steady obedience—choosing eternal priorities over temporary ease. In churches and fellowship meetings, supporters rallied around a shared burden: the harvest was plentiful, and laborers needed preparation rooted in truth, holiness, and courage.

Springfield and Ministry Preparation

Located in the Ozarks crossroads of Springfield, the college stood within reach of many local churches while also looking outward to the nations. Students were trained not only for classrooms but for pulpits, visitation, missions outreach, and everyday service. From modest beginnings, the school grew steadily. With enrollment now exceeding 2,000, it stands among America’s largest Bible colleges. Graduates have gone into churches, chaplaincy, and mission fields across the world for the sake of Christ’s name.
